I don’t want to pretend like I know where ideas come from. The idea for this month’s story, “ELMER CODD”, came to me after reading a book that claims to help you generate more ideas.
The thesis of The Artist’s Way is that as human beings, the act of being creative is our natural state. The problem is we have socially learned to put up blocks to our creativity. Opening ourselves to the creativity of our inner artist (or our inner child) is mostly about figuring out how to silence these blocks long enough to return to our natural creative state. Tapping into our creative selves is a simple act of “picking up the phone”.
I found this image a little bit humorous and it stuck with me. Imagine just “picking up the phone” and finding an abundance of great original ideas on the other line? Wouldn’t that be great? ELMER CODD is about an unsuspecting writer who is so lucky to land this setup. He discovers that even with its benefits, the arrangement comes with its own problems.
One last thing before the comic, Fickle Bean No. 1, the first printed book in my mini-comic series, is coming back from the printer next week! This item and a couple of other things will be for sale on my e-commerce site. Keep an eye out for when I mark those products available and you can order your very own Fickle Bean stuff!
Fickle Bean No. 1 is 24 pages long and includes printings of ELMER CODD, HAUNT ME, some other original art, and a stylish cover 😎. Buying it is a great way to support me continuing to make comics, order yours while supplies last. (I only printed 300!)
That’s it, I hope you like ELMER CODD.
I can smell the water and hear the moths tapping against the porch lamp when I stare at the last panel.
Savory dinner cereal? That does sound like an original idea. Nicely done! And I really love the final image. Keep up the great work.
