NIGHT VISION #9
A western comic? A sci-f comic? Or maybe just a look at vision and perspective.
Sheriff Riley has found a crash site in the desert. He can’t seem to communicate with the creature who survived the crash, and he can’t convince anybody from the town to come help.
The theme for the upcoming Fickle Bean No.2 is vision. I knew that I wanted to do a story that explored looking through multiple perspectives in a comic. For NIGHT VISION #9 I was visually inspired by vistas and landscapes from my childhood growing up in the Southwest and a recent trip to Joshua Tree National Park. Portraying those vistas from different angles and different times of day was a fun way to push a cinematic layer of vision into this comic.
Narratively, I knew I wanted to do something that experimented with the idea of a breakdown or a difference in vision. For a long time I’ve been preoccupied with that idea that people around us might see differently than we do. Imagine for a second my green was your orange, how would we ever know that we weren’t seeing the same? The Worm character pushes this idea by being visually crippled by the strength of daylight in the desert.

Thank you as always for the read. One more quick announcement before you go. In September I celebrated a milestone for Fickle Bean by surpassing 100 subscribers on Substack. Thank you everyone for the interest, it has been overwhelming!
To celebrate the milestone, I’m announcing a referral program to grow this Substack even further. Here’s how it works.
By clicking the button above and sending a referral invite to your friends, you will earn a point for everyone who comes and subscribes. This leaderboard will track who has earned the most referrals. But that’s not all! This referral program includes more than just bragging rights, there are three award tiers:
Get a free Fickle Bean sticker for your first referral
Get a free copy of Fickle Bean No. 1 for 5 referrals
And (this is exciting) get a FICKLE BEAN ORIGINAL PAGE for 25 referrals
The 25 referral prize is a very special offer. These are the 11x17 hand-drawn pages that are the first step in making Fickle Bean. Winners of this prize can select their favorite page while supplies last.
Hope you enjoyed the comic, get busy referring!
Good choice coming from the west space people or something love it.
